Picking around the web the other day. I ran into Portableapps.com
which has a fully function list of open source software that can be easily run off a Flash ( USB) Drive. Installation is pretty easy for someone with some basic knowledge of software and you can run Firefox, Open Office, NVU - a web editor similar to Frontpage, Clawwin - a free anti virus, Gimp ( a graphic design program) and much more. So, if you are visiting your friends for the weekend and need to get to a specific program - then portable apps can be an answer.
